Members of the Regeneration Partnership recently attended the Scarman Trust Conference at Sunderland's Stadium of Light.  An excellent presentation from Fundraising Skills Ltd gave members 10 Top Tips when making funding applications. . .

10.  Define Your Project . . . consult, come up with a wishlist and from that agree your priorities.

9.  Do Your Research . . . talk to the funders about your idea, check when funders meet to consider applications.

8.  Personal Approach . . . Write to a person, handwrite the application envelope, Does anyone know anyone you can approach?

7.  Clear Presentation . . . Use direct language and have conviction, use plain english (www.plainenglish.co.uk), use interesting formatting.

6.  Explain who you are . . . Describe your organisation.

5.  Prove the need . . . Explain why your work is needed, list who you have consulted, who endorses your project, include quotes and tell them how your organisation is unique.

4.  Tell Your Story . . . Talk about real people not things, talk success, explain the impact your project will have on lives, set out how many people your project will help.

3.  Present Clear Finances . . . Get estimates not guestimates, include the total project cost, show a breakdown of item costs, say what you've raised in funding and state what is still to raise.

2.  Always Proof Read . . . two heads are better than one, check for typos and spelling mistakes, is your name and address down correctly, does your applicatin make sense?

1.  Give Us The Money! . . . Plainly, clearly and confidently ask for the amount of money you need.
