Partnership backs Easington Youthbuild In supporting the new Easington Youthbuild project, Horden and Easington Colliery Regeneration Partnership has given £2088 which will train one young person from Easington Colliery and one young person from Horden as part of the Easington Youthbuild project. Easington Youthbuild is a pilot project to support and enable local young people (aged 16-25) to work, live and contribute to the community by providing affordable housing in Horden and Easington Colliery through the renovation of empty derelict properties. The project has recruited and trained 12 local young people in construction industry skills to improving their transition to independent living and further education or employment. The first recruits started in March 2008 and finished July 2008. A second intake of recruits is being sought. Partnership member recognised as a Community Champion scooping £2,000! Horden Regeneration Partnership member, Billy Hill has been recognised as a Community Champion and awarded £2,000 to complete his project of creating a community garden at Robinson House, Horden. Billy used his own initiative to get the idea of a community garden off the ground which involves the elderly residents of Robinson House, a sheltered housing complex belonging to District of Easington Council. The project received the backing of a number of groups including County Councillor Paul Stradling who gave an early donation to get things moving. With assistance from Horden Regeneration Partnership, Billy applied to the Scarman Trust for funding which will pay for a large summer house and equipment to ensure that the residents have the tools and facilities to maintain the garden for themselves. Billy wanted to encourage the residents of Robinson House to enjoy what had been an empty and unused courtyard. With the community garden now underway, Billy is delighted that the residents are enjoying being a part of this project. 7. Church In Need Of Funds St Mary's Church in Horden has had a successful fundraising appeal. Thieves recently stripped lead from the Church roof causing about £5,000 worth of damage. Following this; the people of Horden have donated more than £4,000 in a collection towards maintenance work at the Church. Father Kevin Smith is very touched and grateful for the donations; however the church is still under a lot of financial pressure as it is now ninety years old and even without theft and vandalism is in need of constant repair. The boundary wall is also greatly in need of repair which will cost tens of thousands of pounds and St Mary's Community Hall is in need of further redevelopment to encourage more community use. If anyone is interested in fundraising for or giving donations to this worthy cause please contact Father Kevin Smith on 0191 586 7110. Alternatively you can also contact Christine Stoker on 0191 527 0635 or 079 6655 1328. 8. Partnership awards community groups money for training Horden and Easington Colliery Regeneration Partnership has awarded several local community groups small grants to fund a range of training which will boost the skills of their volunteers: Easington Colliery recently agreed to fund a tractor driving course for a volunteer at White Lea Farm, a Youth Work Project for the Church of Ascension and an indoor scaffolding course for a volunteer at Easington Social Welfare Centre. Horden Regeneration Partnership agreed funding for Horden Colliery Residents Association volunteers to receive training on their new ICT equipment and for a first aid course for a new parents group at Cotsford Infants School. Groups are being awarded funding on a first come first served basis. New funds will be made available in Project year 2 for groups who aren't lucky enough to receive an award at this time.
